Industry Standards Defined

The application of one material over another to provide skin or layer intended to control the infiltration of weather elements, or for aesthetic purposes. Cladding does not necessarily have to provide a waterproof condition but is instead a control element. This control element may only serve to safely direct water or wind in order to control run-off and prevent infiltration into the building structure. Cladding applied to windows is often referred to window wrap and is a very specialized field. In layman’s terms, it’s is the process of removing existing cladding or shell (stucco, cedar, brick) from the exterior of a home or building and replacing it with a new façade in cedar, Hardie board, stone, stucco…etc.
Building Envelope:
A building envelope is the physical separators between the conditioned and unconditioned environment of a building including the resistance to air, water, heat, light, and noise] transfer. The three basic elements of a building envelope are a weather barrier, air barrier, and thermal barrier. The weather barrier may be in a different location than the air and thermal barriers such as in house with an unheated attic. The term building envelope is sometimes used synonymously with building enclosure but the latter term also includes the broader aspects of appearance, structure, safety from fire and security. The act of creating a building envelope is sometimes called weatherization. Building envelope essentially refers to the last line of defense against the elements.
Waterproofing incorporates either the infiltration of water into structures or the escape of water out of structures. Waterproofing solutions are used for basements, tunnels, water-retaining structures, bridge decks and other types of civil infrastructure. Elastomeric Coating (unsaturated rubber) range includes watertight concrete and mortar and waterproofing membranes. This application is often seen on the decks of apartments and/or condominiums.
Window Wrap:
Products designated to maintain air tightness between air barrier materials, assemblies and components, to fasten them to the structure of the building, or both (e.g., sealants, tapes, backer rods, transition membranes, self adhered membranes, header flashings). Window wrap components are used to connect and seal air barrier materials and/or air barrier assemblies together. This is often one of the most over-looked aspects of keeping the exterior of the building free from water intrusion.
Invasive Investigations (interior and exterior):
The Intrusive Inspection is to determine if defects and damages exist that cannot be seen. The inspection process is performed under guidance/direction of a 3rd party (Consultant Agency) focusing on safety issues, water intrusion, code violations and damages. Invasive Investigations are based around identifying potential discrepancies or failures with windows, doors, W.R.B, sheet metal flashings, roof components, exterior claddings, penetration sealants and interior components.
